Weeding Out the Scams
There are literally thousands of great business opportunities on the Internet. Unfortunately there are also thousands of scams. One of the hardest things for new online entrepreneur is telling the good from the bad.
The first thing you need to do is apply some common sense. Does it sound too good to be true? Then there’s a real good chance it IS too good to be true. Although some of these may be legit, outrageous claims should raise a red flag signifying extra caution. Do your homework and investigate the company, the opportunity and anything you can find on the owners. If you can’t find much, this is your second red flag and enough for to walk away.
If an opportunity passes the first test of reasonableness, continue with the homework anyway. An educated consumer is a smart consumer. Study the company, the opportunity and the owners. A good place to start is the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau (for U.S. companies). These agencies will have reports if others feel they’ve been scammed before. Where you’ve received an email, for instance, and don’t have a lot to go on, check snopes.com for factual accuracy.
And finally, when in doubt, don’t buy it! I’d even go so far as to say don’t buy any business opportunities. That’s different from buying information or training, of course. That can significantly decrease your learning curve and make you profitable faster, if you find the right training.
